Curriculum
The learning at Charterhouse is well researched and planned with the emphasis on play and having fun. Our curriculum is adapted to meet the children's individual needs. We ensure the children are given opportunities to explore and expand their knowledge, to introduce their own personal interests and are given equal access to all activities.
We plan our activities to cover all areas of the Early Years' Foundation Stage framework, (EYFS)to ensure that every child receives a quality experience that supports their care, learning and development.
The Early Years' Foundation Stage
A Unique Child:
Every child is a competent learner from birth who can be resilient, capable, confident and self-assured.
Positive Relationships:
Children learn to be strong and independent from a base of loving and secure relationships with parents and/or a key person.
Enabling Environments:
The environment plays a key role in supporting and extending children's development and learning.
Learning and Development:
Children develop and learn in different ways and at different rates and all areas of Learning and Development are equally important and inter-connected.
Areas of Learning and Development
There are six areas of Learning and Development within the framework, which help people who work with children from birth to five observe, plan and assess activities based on their individual development and needs. Each of these areas has Early Learning Goals, which establish expectations for most children to reach by the end of the reception year.
Personal, Social and Emotional Development:
Children will learn to be self-confident, take an interest in things, know what their own needs are, tell the difference between right and wrong, and be able to dress and undress.
Communication, Language and Literacy:
Children will learn to talk confidently and clearly, hear and say sounds and link them to the alphabet, and enjoy stories, songs and poems. They will read and write some familiar words and learn to use a pencil.
Problem Solving, Reasoning and Numeracy:
Children will develop an understanding of maths through stories, songs, games and imaginative play. They will become comfortable with numbers and with concepts such as 'heavier' or 'bigger'. They will be aware of shapes and space.
Knowledge and Understanding of the World:
Children will explore and find out about the world around them. They will build with different materials, and find out about everyday technology. They will explore past events in their lives and their families' lives. They will find out about different cultures and beliefs.
Physical Development:
Children will learn how to control their body, move confidently and handle equipment. They are supported in developing an understanding of the importance of physical activity and making healthy choices in relation to food.
Creative Development:
Children will experience creative development by exploring colours and shapes, making things, telling stories and making music.
